Thinking differently and doing differently to make a difference

Impact Giving: Advancing medical innovations

There are many ways that philanthropy can make a difference.  By looking for social returns, philanthropy can make a difference where other mechanisms are less able.

“Philanthropists can go where others fear to tread”.

The formation of collaborations is  important to advance medical research and maximise opportunities for community benefits.  Collaborations can include the bringing together of different scientific disciplines.  Collaborations can also harness the knowledge and experience from different areas including government, financial services, business development and industry who play different roles in advancing discoveries along the innovation pathway.

It is well recognised that there is an opportunity to support the formation of collaborations better.  This doesn’t mean that we should throw out current grant mechanisms but rather look at where support is currently being provided, think differently about how gaps can be bridged, hurdles lowered and then to do something different.

NFMRI has taken this approach in developing its strategy around three key portfolios to;

  • Support medical research,
  • Advance innovations, and
  • Enable collaborations.

NFMRI is also looking to collaborate with government, industry, academia and philanthropy to support these portfolios, partnering with researchers to provide grants and value-add through knowledge, experience and networks.
